Privacy Policy
Last updated 13 October 2026
This policy explains what personal information Let's Talk EV (the "Forum") collects, why, and what you can do about it. The Forum is run by Gustav Joubert in South Africa, who is the "responsible party" under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Contact: the contact form at gustavjoubert.co.za.
What we collect
| Information | Why |
|---|---|
| Username you choose when you register (shown publicly next to your posts) | To identify you and your posts |
| Password, stored only as a salted, one-way hash, never in readable form | To let you log in |
| Threads and replies you write, with the time you wrote them | To run the Forum; these are public |
| Account creation time | Account administration |
| Session cookie while you are logged in (see the Cookie Policy) | To keep you logged in |
| IP address and technical request data (browser, page requested, time) handled by our hosting provider in its server logs, and your IP address held briefly in server memory for rate limiting | Security, abuse prevention and keeping the service running |
We do not collect your email address, name, phone number, location or payment details, and the Forum has no advertising and no analytics or tracking tools. Do not put personal information in your username or posts unless you want it to be public.
How we use it
Only to operate the Forum: showing your posts, logging you in, moderating content, preventing spam and abuse, and keeping the service secure. We do not sell your information or use it for marketing or profiling.
Who else handles it
- Google Cloud (Cloud Run) hosts the Forum and keeps standard server logs.
- Supabase hosts the database that stores accounts and posts.
- Google Fonts: your browser loads the Inter typeface from Google's servers, so Google receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads.
These providers act for us in running the service and may store data on servers outside South Africa. We take reasonable steps to make sure they protect it. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the Forum and its members from abuse.
How long we keep it
Accounts and posts are kept until the account is closed or the content is removed. When a moderator removes a post, it is hidden from the Forum straight away but may remain in our database and backups for a time before it is erased. Server logs are kept by the hosting provider for its standard period.
Security
Passwords are hashed with a salt, sessions are signed and HttpOnly, connections use HTTPS, and requests are rate limited. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you do not use anywhere else.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may ask us to tell you what information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it, and you may object to our processing of it. Because accounts have no email address, tell us your username through the contact form at gustavjoubert.co.za and we may ask you to prove the account is yours (for example by posting an agreed phrase from it). Where an account is deleted we will delete or anonymise its personal information; posts in other people's conversations may be kept in anonymised form so the discussion still makes sense.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa (inforegulator.org.za).
Children
The Forum is for people aged 18 and over. If you believe a child has created an account, please tell us and we will remove it.
Changes
We will update this page if our practices change; the date above shows the latest version. See also our Terms and Cookie Policy.
